27. BERRY CEMETERY
Located northeast of Oakland, Illinois
This cemetery is the first burial ground in the Oakland vicinity. It is also one of
the oldest cemeteries in Coles County. Located northeast of Oakland, one can follow a
road four blocks north of the west side of the Oakland Square, which leads east to
the cemetery.
There was a church in the vacant lot near the cemetery. It was constructed of logs
and covered an area approximately 36 feet by 24 feet. This building was later moved
and used as a school house.
When the periods of high water made the cemetery inaccessible the dead were buried in
the Roseville (Oakland) Cemetery, land which was donated by Dr. Hiram Rutherford. As
gradually more people were buried in Oakland, the Berry Cemetery fell into disuse.
The old right-of-way became over-grown with vegetation, weeds, and trees were
thick.
The fences broke down and many of the stones were overturned and/or broken.
Interested people collected about $1,300 and many hours of labor were donated to
repair the cemetery and provided a road to the burial ground. Volunteers still
maintain the cemetery.
