detachment from Maramek, and at Cahokia or Tamaroa.

de Chartres, Mission at Cahokia, Concession of M. Renault.

1752 - Census of Illinois by French - included Village de Caskaskias, Fort de Chartre,
Village de St Philip, Parire de Rocher, Coadskias (Cahokia), and Vilage de st Jeune Vieve
(Ste. Genevieve).

1767 Census - Under British regime.
Dec 9, 1778 - Illinois County, part of Virginia.
Mar 1, 1784 - Illinois became a part of Northwest Territory.
Aug & Sep. 1787 Census - Prepared for use to petition Congress for land grants for
settlers in Illinois. Listed inhabitants in Cahokia, Kaskaskia, and Prairie de Rocher, and
Americans in Illinois.
Apr 27, 1790 - St. Clair County formed.
Jun 20, 1790 - Knox County Formed. Area of Coles County was within this area.
Feb. 3, 1801 - New county boundaries, Area of Coles County became part of St. Clair
County.
Jul. 4, 1801 - Became part of new Indiana Territory.
Mar. 1, 1809 - Illinois Territory established.
1810 Federal Census - One year after Illinois became a separate territory.

Sep 14, 1812 - Area of Coles County became a part of new Madison County which was formed
from St. Clair County.
Nov. 28, 1814 - Area of Coles County became a part of new Edwards which was formed from
Madison County.
Dec. 31, 1816 - Area of Coles County became a part of new Crawford County which was formed
from Edwards County.
1818 State Census - To substantiate the claim that Illinois had sufficient population to be
given statehood.

Dec. 3, 1818 - Illinois became a State.
Mar. 22, 1819 - Area of Coles County became a part of new Clark County which was formed
from Crawford County.
1820 State Census - Area part of Clark County, Illinois.

1830 Federal Census - Northern part of area, part of Clark County, Illinois, and southern
part of area attached to Edgar County, Illinois Fifth Census, M19 Roll 23.
Dec 25, 1830 - Became new Coles County and included present day Cumberland and Douglas
County
1835 State Census - For Coles County not found.
1840 State Census - Returns include Coles County.
1840 Federal Census - Coles Co., Illinois Sixth Census M704 Roll 57.
Mar 2, 1843 Cumberland Co. formed from southern part of Coles Co.
1845 State Census - Returns for Coles County not found.
1850 Federal Census - Coles County, Illinois, Seventh Census M432 Roll 101.
Included Douglas County and was divided into Precincts.
1855 State Census - Returns include Coles County.
Feb 8, 1859 Douglas County formed from northern part of Coles County. This established the
current area Coles County.
1860 Federal Census - Coles County, Illinois, Eighth Census M653 Roll 171.
The county was divided into Townships.
