• TOLEDO DEMOCRAT, April 21, 1904, page 8 - In Memoriam - Francis Marion Goodman was born in Clark county, Ill., May 26, 1833 and died April 1, 1904. He came to Coles county in early years and the greater part of his life was spent in Hutton township. He was twice married, first to Miss Strader, she died, leaving two children, W. H. and Emily. In 1869 Mr. Goodman was married to Mrs. Angeline Anderson and to their union, five children were born; Marion E., Otto C., Zelda, Dessa and Charles. A stepdaughter, Louisa knew him as her own father and was treated as one of his own children; she, with the others, survive, excepting Zelda, who passed over the River a few months ago. He was converted and joined the church at Stringtown about forty years ago, and lived a consistent Christian life till his death. He was a great Bible student and had made a special study of it for years. He was a firm believer in the Christian church, but was always ready to help the cause in general. He was a member of Hutton lodge No. 698, A. F. & A. M. and was a firm and consistent Mason. His death came as a great shock and it was hard to realize the truth, when we had seen him such a short time before, in perfect health. Yet, "thus in the midst of life, we are in death." His death caused universal sorrow among a wide circle of friends, for he was widely known and to know him was to be a friend. He was always ready to assist the needy if within his power and there are those who remember him by many acts of kindness. He was kind, gentle and loving in the home, and his children knew no harsh words from him. He always admonished them in the kindest way possible, and they now realize, more than ever, what a kind and loving father meant to them. The wife mourns the loss of a loving husband, the children, an affectionate father, those who knew him, a true friend. His death removes from our midst a man of sterling worth, one who was loved and respected by all who knew him. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Dudley of Charleston Sunday. April 3, and he was laid away on the anniversary of the resurrection of our Savior. It is with the confidence that He who broke the spell of death and triumphed over the grave, has removed the sting from trusting human hearts and taken him to a better home. The sympathy of all is extended to the family in their bereavement. He has only joined the loved ones on the other shore, and waits to greet you welcome home. Blanche Cottingham.

John married Mary Jane Conley,341 daughter of John Daiger Conley and Jane "Jinsie" Rennels, on 4 Nov 1869 in Coles Co., Illinois, USA.104 Mary was born on 24 Mar 1850 in Hutton Twp, Coles Co, Illinois, USA,13,104,341 died on 11 Jul 1909 in Ashmore Twp., Coles Co., Illinois, USA103,104 at age 59, and was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Westfield, Clark Co., Illinois, USA.103,104
• In the 1850 U.S. Census of Salisbury Pct., Coles Co., Illinois, USA, enumerated on 20 Nov 1850, she appears in the household of John Conneley. Name listed Mary J., age 2/3, born Illinois. 341
• Mary Jane is a descendant of the large family that settled in Hutton Twp., with the several branches fo the same family spelling their name variously as Conley, Connely, and/or Connelly. She was born in a little log house, which stood just east of the present Liberty Church in Hutton Twp., between the church and the old Elijah Conley farm.
Elijah Conley was her oldest brother and inherited the farm from his father. This place is located near the center of Section 34, Township 12 north, Range 10 east. She became a member of the United Bretheran Church at Liberty Chapel in 1866, Rev. A. J. Nugent being the officiating minister. John and Mary Jane were married in Coles County (probably at Charleston) by Col. Alexander P. Dunbar, J.P. (Dunbar was a resident of Charleston). In the 1870 Census of Coles County, John and Mary Jane were residing with his mother, Patience (Stewart) Strader and John's two younger sisters, Elizabeth and Emaline at his parent's farm in Section 26, Hutton Twp. John and Mary Jane's first four children were born at this location. Patience Strader died in the summer or fall of 1879, the farm was probably sold to settle the estate. John and family then moved to a farm located just across the road from the Fred Weber Homestead northwest of Westfield about 4 miles, which would make the small log cabin home that the Straders lived in, near the southeast corner of the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 23, Township 12 north, Range 10 east, in Hutton Twp. The Straders fifth child, Alva Curtis Strader was born at this locaiton in Jan. 1880 (or 17 Mar. 1880 - as the official court records show.) Sometime later in the year 1880, the Strader family, consisting of John, Mary Jane, Lizzie, Will, and Alva (two daughters having died in infancy) removed from Illinois to Schell City, Vernon County, MO. With them went a large group of relatives, including John's sister, Angeline (Strader) Goodman and her family, probably his sister, Emaline (Strader) Gilbert and others. They remained at Schell City until after June 1883, as their daughter Myrtle was born there. Upon returning to Coles County, IL., in 1883, the Strader family lived just south of Loxa, IL., which is west of Charleston, IL. This location was probably near Sections 13 and/or 14 in Township 12 north, Range 8 east, Lafayette Twp., Coles Co., IL. While living there, a daughter, Lizzie atteded Lee's Academy at Loxa. Sometime before 1890, the Strader family moved north into Bowdre Twp., Douglas Co., IL., about 3 miles south west of Hindsboro to the old Barnes place. This home on the corner of the Old Plank Road (now a part of Route 130) and a county road, was the former home of two doctors, Dr. John C. Barnes and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Bower) Coombs Barnes, who moved from the place in 1883, when they started a lumber yard business in Hindsboro. The Strader children remembered the strong odor of medicine left in the house, when they moved in. While living here the Strader children attended Sunday School at the Bradshaw Chapel (? Methodist Church). The Strader's eighth child, Mae was born in Bwodre Twp. in 1890 on 26 April. Mary Jane had a younger sister, Susan (Conley) Horsley, who also resided in Bowdre Twp., with her family. This family consisted of John Horsley (1840-1917) the father, Susan (Conley); Horsley (1852-1890) the mother, and the children, William, Walter, Arthur, Anna, Theodore (1887-1889) and a son, John E. Horsley (1890-1890). The youngest child, John E. Horsley was born 9 May 1890, in Bowdre Twp. His mother, Susan died of complications following his birth, on 15 May 1890. So Mary Jane took her infant nephew, just a few days old, to nurse with her infant daughter. The little boy, however, failed to survive and passed away, 5 Aug. 1890. He is buried with parents in Liberty Cemetery, Hutton Twp., Coles Co., IL. Probably because the strain of nursing two infants at one time, was very difficult, Mary Jane contracted tuberculosis. For over 19 years, she suffered from this malady. Her daughter Mae, who was never very strong, may have also suffered as a result of the strain of the two infants. Mary Jane by doctor's orders was supposed to drink a glass of beer a day, probably to supply carbohydrates to her system. By the time of the birth of their ninth child, Harry, the family was residing in Seven Hickory Twp., Coles Co., IL. This was in 1893. This was in the Rural Retreat Area in northern Seven Hickory Twp. They lived in Section 23, Township 14 north, Range 9 east, Seven Hickory Township. While living in this area, John Strader served as a school director for the Wyeth School and moved his membership from the Wiley Brick Church to the Christian Church at Kemp, IL., where it remained until his death. Sometime around 1899 (?) the Straders moved from Seven Hickory Twp. into Charleston Twp., east of Charleston, about 3 miles, on East Harrison Street Road, probably in Section 5, Township 12 north, Range 10 east. This place was on the right side of the road, just before starting down the hill to the Embarras River, west of the bridge. The family lived here for a short time only, as in the spring, when the river rose and flooded the area, snakes came into the yard of the house. By 1900, the family had moved into Ashmore Twp., Coles Co., IL. This was the last major move. John Strader purchased 160 acres in the sough west corner of Section 17, Township 12 north, Range 14 west, on county line between Coles and Clark Counties, about one and one-half miles north of Westfield, IL. Mary Jane died in the house (which is no longer standing) at 11:15 a.m., aged 59 yr. 3 mo. 16 da.

To this union were born 9 children, 3 passed away in early life, 6 survive, residing in homes near by. Mrs. Strader became member of the United Brethren church at Liberty Chapel, in 1866, Reb. A. J. Nugent being the officiating minister. Thru all these years, she has been a faithful communicant and lived a sonsistan Christian life. In the home, she was ever intent on seeing the children brought into the church. Mrs. Strader was attacked with tuberculosis 19 years ago, which never let go its victim, but made her a constant sufferer, and has not been from the family residence since last December. These last months have been passed with absolute submission to God's will preferring to be absent from the body, and present with Christ. She was conscious to the last moment, and, closing her eyes, requested her husband to hold her hand until all was over. Besides the immediate family, one sister and three brothers remain to mourn their loss. Funeral services took place in the College Chapel, conducted (sic) by Rev. T. D. Davis and Prof. W. Shuey. Interment was made at Maple Hill Cemetery _ CARD OF THANKS _ We wish in this manner to extend our sincere thanks to our neighbors and friends who kindly assisted us during the illness of our beloved wife and mother. _______________________________________________John Strader _______________________________________________and Children.

William married Merium Harriet "Hattie" Stone 137,147 on 26 Jan 1875 in Five Mile House, Hutton Twp., Cole Co., Illinois, USA 147.,443 She was usually called Hattie.
General Notes: William and Hattie were married by Abram BENNETT. _ William's time and place of death are also shrouded in mystery. Sam Sargent writes: "they lived at the 5 mile house awhile." This is a historic house located 5 miles west of Westfield. Sargent also wrote that they traveled with the Salvation Army for awhile; also that they had an older daughter who took T.B. and died, unmarried; that she was buried at Whetstone Cemetery. The memory of Carroll Cox, Nettie Hershey and Janie Robbins seem to indicate the couple had several children; that the mother and all but 2 of the children died of T.B., and are buried at an unknown location; that Riley took the 2 remaining children, Everett and Stella, to live with his sister, Rebecca "Becky" Goble; that Riley then left, and was believed to be working in the west; that letters quit coming from him, and he was never heard from again. Janie Robbins believed he was in San Francisco at the time of the Earthquake in 1906. I had a search made of California death records from 1905 to 1958, nothing was found. However, many persons probably lost their lives there and no record left. Letha KNOLES, another niece, believes her father, Frank Connelly, told her that Riley and all his family are buried at Meshak Cemetery, Oklahoma City. There is a lot there, registered to an R. Connelly. However, no names are avialable as to those persons buried there. There are some thoughts on this and his life, in the letters from Nettie Hershey; she was about 11 at the time of his last visit to her family, and has clear memory of many things. My own belief is that the wife and 2 or 3 children are probably buried at Meshak, but Riley is not. This is just a hunch and probably cannot be proved. Everett and Stella continued living with the Joe GOBLE family. Elsie Smith, Goble History

General Notes: While still a young man, Everett left Coles County. He worked in various places in Kansas and Iowa, before settling at Alden, Iowa. He married and had 5 children. He did not keep in touch with many of the relatives; it was through a note in a journal of a cousin, Eva GOBLE COX, telling of a brief encounter or visit with him, in his home town, Alden, that I learned he might still live there. Through a Telephone Directory in our Library, I located a son who lives at Dumont, Iowa. Elsie Smith, Goble History

Marriage Notes:
General Notes: My uncle, Wirt Connelly (C.W.), was 13 when he lived near this family near Connely Springs, thinks George and Laura lived there and had a grist mill. They perhaps went back to Illinois before her death. Sam Sargent writes: "Laura Goble was the daughter of William and Mary Jane BROWN GOBLE. She died at the 'Billy' Goble place. This was a log house and was known as the 'weaning house,; where most of the 'billy' Goble children lived after they were married." Elsie Smith, Goble History She died at age 31 yr. 2 mo. 26 da.

General Notes: Mary died at a 68 yr. _ Probably Joseph and Mary came to Vernon Co., MO, about the time his parents did. As earlier reported, they later moved by covered wagon to Oklahoma Territory; this was in early 1893,. Jim and their mother, perhaps Riley and his family, already lived there. Frank and his wife had 3 children at the time of the move. It is belived they had lost some children before the move. Their daughter, Letha, records their lives thus; they lived near Shawnee, at a small community known as Bethel; later they lived on a farm 15 miles southeast of Oklahoma City; they owned 4 farms of 160 acres each, some land near present Tenkiller lake; part of the Oklahoma City farms was taken for Draper Lake; he gave each child 80 acres; was a rancher, cattle buyer, later sold real estate; he was an unordained minister and preached many sermons and funeral services.
